A bicycle story

With the purpose of analyzing how the bike sharing contributes with the bicycle history in Shanghai, we present two data visualizations: one related to the story itself, showing how through the years China has been evolving its bicycle story and legacy. The second one, presents the two-main bike sharing companies at the moment, and how they are spread around China, contributing to a new chapter of its history.

MoBike VS Ofo

We choose mobike and ofo this two companies because at the moments they are the big players of the market. On one side, there is MOBIKE (Beijing Mobike Technology Co.), funded by Hu Weiwei, who has been backed by a group who includes Tencent Holdings, the nation’s biggest internet com pany. On the other side, we have OFO (Beijing Bikelock Technology Co.), a cycle-sharing startup born from Dai Wei, who’s got around 100 million funds from investors such as Xiaomi Corp. and Didi Chuxing, the ride-hailing giant of China. We compared them in the terms of deposit, price, cost fundings and people’s evaluation. In addition we also find the differences between the generations.

The data map tells how fast bike sharing industry is expanding and influencing how people commute in city life. All 7 new start-ups in this industry are covering more and more major cities in China, producing enormous amount of new bikes for people to ride. In the top chart, city population is correlated to the amount of bikes from ofo and Mobike. Through this visualization, companies could know the market capacity and potential. The bottom charts show market penetration for both ofo and Mobike in 17 weeks, starting from November of 2016. They tell how those two oligopolies react to market and competition.
